OVERVIEW

In the world where driving requires theoretical and practical tests and courses, how inherent thinking, problem solving, relationship, choosing a spouse, marriage, parenting, etc. are institutionalized in all of us (in our bloods). Every action with every method someone does is considered the best. The fact is that we are paying the price for many mistakes we have made in the past.

There is no doubt that the complexities of life have incremented significantly in the past centuries, and interactions have become more and more difficult. In the past, physical, sexual and social maturity occurred approximately at the same time. However, we can observe that social maturity occurs even more than a decade later than sexual and physical maturity. It takes years to find a job and be recognized as an independent cell in society. In the meantime, we can perceive that resolving conflicts and problems together with the quality of communication depend on life skills.

OVERVIEW

There is no doubt that educating a child and interacting with adolescents require education. Although almost all parents’ effort is to raise a child with an amazing future, which is commendable, less attention has been paid to learning the necessary skills. However, public acceptance of this skill is experiencing an increment.

If you sulk your child (get angry with your child), have told them that you will leave them, you tell them the sentence “I do not love you” to do something, you do not enjoy playing with them, you often urge him to eat, you give him abstract commands such as “Be a good kid!”, you chose their appropriate clothes for each party and assembly, you constantly remind them to greet so as to be politer, you urge them to use the bathroom before leaving the house, their lesson is the most important issue in their lives, etc.

You fail to have good interaction with your teenager, you consider advice as a way to correct him, you compare, you do not listen to them calmly, they do not share most of their thoughts and feelings with you, you check them through their friends, you suspect whether they use weeds or other substances, etc.

Therefore, you need to realize that a few hours of counseling can have a crucial role on your children’s future. Do not procrastinate counseling and contact Dr. Afshari as soon as possible. He can be your companion and help you through this journey with his nearly two decades of experience.

Parenting and its principles

Parenting is a collection (set) of knowledge and child raising skills in a constructive and non-destructive way, a way to develop their abilities and skills and manage their behavioral problems and issues. Therefore, the primary purpose of educating children is to raise independent, capable, responsible and confident people who benefit from appropriate moral and social growth. Although It is an urge to manage decisive discipline for our children, we have to provide them with a safe and pleasant environment before that. A safe environment without any danger and with our supervision and care, by which it means that we know where they are every moment, what they do and who their companies are. At the same time, this environment should be instructive and interesting for the children and helps them with their interactions to communicate with others. For instance, when our child asks a question, asks for help, demands attention, or requires advice or suggestion.

Decisive discipline: To act decisively and have consistency when your child misbehaves, respond immediately to his behavior and teach him to behave in a better way.

Types of parenting styles

  • Authoritarian style: There are some parents who merely act as a restrictive guardian and observer in their interactions with their teenagers. This means that their teenagers are not allowed to participate in any activities or gatherings in which they are not supervised by their parents.

The result of authoritarian parenting:

  • Parents do not show adequate sensitivity to the pressure on adolescents and this sensitivity is mostly less than it should be.
  • Adolescents growing up in these families are not independent and decision-makers.
  • Parents soon lose their good relationship with their adolescents.
  • Since providing parents with any information may result in severe punishment, the teenagers hide everything and refuse to express their thoughts, feelings and motives.
  • The children coming from such families face a number of problems during growth and adulthood, including depression, behavioral problems, low self-esteem, poor social skills, unhappiness and social withdrawal. As a result, isolation and seclusion, weakness in decision making and goal setting, high anxiety, dependence on parents, lack of curiosity, low capacity and inappropriate reactions when confronting failure (for instance, giving up in girls and hostility in boys) is seen in these adolescents.
  • Indulgent-permissive style: These parents take things too easy. They believe that adolescents can make their own decisions about anything. This type of parent often says: “I used to do different things when i was a child and I did not experience any harm from them”.

The result of this parenting style:

  • When these teenagers enter the society, they fail to perform their duties and will suffer from frustration and failure.
  • They are mostly incapable of understanding the consequences of their behaviors or they are poor at this understanding. They have little academic achievements and aggression and behavioral problems is a common thing among these children.
  • These teenagers face frequent failures in their adulthood.
  • This adolescence suffers from low tolerance and they show sharp and incorrect encounters confronting life challenges.
  • These teenagers are more likely to suffer from conduct disorders, delinquency, antisocial behaviors and drug abuse.
  • The indulgent-neglectful style: Indifferent or uninvolved parents are careless and separate from their children and do not have interactions with them. This type of parents are deficient in both love and discipline, do not pay adequate attention to their children and there are no clear expectations from their children that this family exists. The highest rate of behavioral problems composed of substance use is related to uninvolved family.

The result of this type of parenting style:

  • Feel rejected
  • Aggression
  • Disobedience
  • Antisocial behaviors
  • Weakness or lack of secure attachment
  • Not following and obeying the standards
  • Poor emotional, cognitive and social skills
  • Join and company anti-social groups and gangs
  • The authoritative-reciprocal style:

This balanced style has been considered as the most effective method of raising among many experts. Balanced parents benefit from knowledge, affection and influential ability, without being excessively violent or careless. They articulate all issues, have a respectful mutual conversation with their teenager, provide reason for limitations, seek opportunities for their teenagers to practice suitable and safe decision making. These parents are capable of controlling their feelings and reaction while the discussion and fight with their teenagers escalates.

The result of this style of parenting:

  • The adolescents feel that they are accepted.
  • The adolescents take control of their lives.
  • Their personalities and point of views can grow freely.

Principles of parenting

  • Establish good relationships with our children and try to maintain it.
  • Participate in the activities and life of our children.
  • Consider clear and explicit rules and determine the consequences of non-compliance to rules.
  • Supervise our children.
  • Teach our children to choose good friends and how to interact with them in an appropriate way.
  • Be a good role model for our children.
  • Principles of teaching the right choice of friends by adolescents and parental supervision to friends
  • Friends role: As a parent, we should never beware our children of being friends with other teenagers, this request is against the logical rules of adolescent growth. In order to develop interpersonal and social skills, teenagers need relationships with their friends.
  • Parents role in overcoming the pressure of friends: All teenagers have to learn how to maintain their values and identities while adapting themselves to teamwork. Increasing your children’s self-confidence and security through helping them lead to their preparation for overcoming the pressure of the group.
  • Teaching teenagers to say “NO”: Adolescents manage to learn to resist others suggestions and deny their requests. An important point to be aware of is that the influence of friends’ companionship is not always due to weakness in the ability to say no. Teenagers mostly start smoking or use drugs in order to conform (go with the stream!!) to others or to match their friends. This is the reason they do not need the suggestion or insistence of their friends and they make the decision on their own.
  • Have communication with the friends of our children.
  • Supervise teenagers’ friendly parties.
  • Teach decision-making skills to our children.
