what is major depression?

A major depressive disorder occurs without any history of manic episodes. The least major depression episode should last is two weeks. A patient who is diagnosed with major depressive disorder must have at least four symptoms of a specific list, consisting of changes in appetite and weight, sleep and activity changes, lack of energy, feelings of guilt, difficulty in thinking and decision-making and having recurring thoughts about suicide or death.

Symptoms of major depression

  • Depression exists in most hours of the day and almost every day. The person dealing with a depressive mood admits that, for instance, there are feelings of sadness, frustration, emptiness or there are times that it is obvious to other people, like a tearful face. It can be seen as an irritable mood in both children and adolescents.
  • A significant decrease in interests and enjoyments in almost every activity of your daily routine. Either the person involved acknowledges that or other people observe these changes.
  • Marked weight loss without being on a diet or weight gain (more than 5% body weight change in a month, for instance), increase or decrease in appetite on nearly every day. The criteria for children is defined with their failure in achieving expected weight.
  • Insomnia or oversleeping almost every day.
  • Psychological-movement Confusion or slowness in almost every day (Feeling mentally restless or slow is not enough, and it should be acknowledged by the others).
  • Fatigue and lack of energy almost every day.
  • Consider oneself as a worthless person or feel excessive or Inappropriate guilt (which could be due to delusion) in almost every day, not just blaming themselves for being sick.
  • Decrement in concentration and thinking ability in almost every day (One’s mental feeling or being observed by the others).
  • Not only being afraid of death, but also keep thinking about death, thoughts of suicide without any clear and specific plan, or having a particular plan to commit suicide or have committed suicide once.

Epidemiology

  • The lifetime prevalence is estimated to be 5 to 17%.
  • It is twice as common in women compared to men.
  • The average age of onset is about 40.
  • It is more common in people with no interpersonal relationship or are divorced.
  • There is no proof of the relationship between socio-economic status of individuals and major depressive disorder.
